Driving Through a Park in Sheboygan WIIf you spend a lot of time on the road, then you are probably aware of how easy it is for your attention to shift. Your mind might begin preparing for a busy workday or considering the many errands that you have to run after work. These strategies can help you improve your focus behind the wheel so you can enjoy a safe drive.

Turn on Drive Mode

Texting and driving not only pulls your attention away from the road ahead, but it has also led to many accidents. Avoid the temptations of texting while driving by turning your phone on drive mode. Many smartphones today allow you to swap your phone to drive mode. It can block messages and phone calls and alert those who contact you that you are driving and will return their message once you have arrived at your destination.

Additionally, a lot of newer vehicles are introducing technologies that allow you to read your text messages hands-free. Many of these features also allow you to respond, without ever taking your eyes off the road.

Make Adjustments Before Leaving

Adjusting your mirrors or seat to a comfortable position can distract you long enough to become a danger. Instead, make it a point to make all necessary adjustments before ever leaving your driveway. This means dressing and grooming at home, ensuring the child seat is properly secured, and having everything you need within a safe reach. If you share your vehicle with another driver, take advantage of memory settings to find your preferred seat and mirror position before ever leaving.

Create a Playlist

Long commutes can leave you feeling tired and groggy. Listening to music can energize you and wake you up. It can be helpful to create a playlist of your favorite feel-good songs ahead of time. You might also choose to listen to an interactive podcast or an educational lesson, like learning a second language, that actively engages you instead. As always, if you still feel tired, it is best to pull over and wait until you are fully awake and alert.

Avoid Eating and Driving

If you are busy, consuming your meals while sitting in traffic might seem like a necessary time saver. However, eating and driving can also be dangerous as it pulls your focus away from the road. It is better to pull over and enjoy your meal before getting back on the road.

If you must eat something while you are driving, then consider choosing foods that are easier to manage like chips, candy, or other finger foods. Food that requires silverware or combining different toppings not only forces you to remove your eyes from the road but also your hands from the steering wheel.

Driving requires your full attention and focus. When you manage other tasks like texting, eating, or making vehicle adjustments, you are putting yourself and your passengers in danger. Fortunately, these strategies can help you improve your awareness and focus when driving.
